NASA S.U.I.T.S.

AR Artemis Challenge Experimental Case Study

I am a part of the Bradley University interdisciplinary team designing an augmented reality experience for NASA with the Microsoft Hololens 2. The project is designed to implement a voice interacted user interface allowing for a hands-free astronaut space simulation. I designed the user interface for the onboarding, vitals, navigation, and science sampling screens. I created the new design style, iconography recognition, and new task-oriented navigation system.

Caterpillar

Fleet Management Software Case Study

The Caterpillar fleet management software development was a user interface and user experience project as part of Caterpillar's World Usability Day contest. The login was conceptualized and prototyped using Figma and utilized Caterpillar’s brand standards and design library. This project was a team effort, which was presented to the Caterpillar headquarters team and my team won first place in the contest. My role as design lead was to create the software archetype, interface, and prototype. Data analytics, journey maps, and personas were provided by Caterpillar to construct the software. After development, the software was tested by three users, who use fleet management software, from Caterpillar's construction company clients.

Pekin Insurance

Paperless Billing Agenda Case Study

Pekin Insurance paperless billing application was created to reduce paper billing while making it easier for the customer to view their insurance policy premium. The application saves Pekin Insurance an estimated $2 million on material costs every six months. As design lead, I designed the application to conform to WCAG, ADA compliance, and Google Material Standards. After development, the prototype was user-tested, and data was presented to the Pekin Insurance User Experience design team.

InControl Diabetes

Diabetes Lifestyle Tool Case Study

The InControl Diabetes Lifestyle Tool is a mobile application designed to allow users with Type One and Type Two Diabetes to more easily be connected to their disease by being able to track personal health information and dietary macro-counting on their mobile device. Most importantly, this app will replace the Blood Glucose Monitoring System, allowing users to check their blood sugar levels using their mobile devices instead of carrying around a bulky exterior monitor.

Chop Chop

Chop Chop App Design

My app, Chop Chop, was conceptualized to help a user find the cheapest and fastest way to get food delivered to their house. The app combines popular sites such as DoorDash, Uber Eats, Postmates, and Grubhub to find the cheapest and fastest delivery time.

Caterpillar

Login Process Case Study

The Caterpillar login process with action management backend was a user interface and user experience project as part of Caterpillar's World Usability Day contest. The login was conceptualized and prototyped using Figma and utilized Caterpillar’s brand standards and design library. This project was a team effort, which I led and presented to Caterpillar. The login was redesigned to retain more client information, cleared up the backend, and created a more natural user flow if they did not know their dealer information.

Safety Duo

Safety Duo App Case Study

Safety Duo is an application for college students who actively wear Apple Watches. The application is launched with voice control by saying, “Hey Siri, I don’t feel safe.” The user then holds down a button on the screen, and if let go, the application will contact the nearest college campus police to notify them of their location. The app would then turn into SOS mode to help ward off potential attackers. The watch would also record the incident and notify an emergency contact. If the watch is low on battery, a lower power mode would be implemented to conserve the watch battery while still notifying the police. If the watch leaves the user’s wrist, then a medical ID will be displayed when the watch is found.

Case Study

My UX Portfolio

Introduction

Overview

This case study is on the design, research, and development of my own personal portfolio.

Challenge

This project's goal was to provide examples of my UX work aesthetically - so that the website itself is a portfolio piece. The portfolio dives deep into the strategies used, problems solved and showcases finished prototypes. My goal is to provide clients and companies with a clear representation of the services and skills I provide, projects I have completed, and passionate work that drives me to create real solutions for users.

Role, Scope, & Constraints

My role in this project was a bit of everything. I was a project manager, information architect, researcher, designer, and developer. The timeline of this project was 3 weeks. I allotted this amount of time for myself because I wanted to prepare for the internship season. I worked between 8 to 12 hours every day to get to a solid portfolio until it felt detailed enough to send out to employers. I created the site in November 2020 during the global COVID-19 pandemic before most companies' applications went live.

Bradley University Fall semester was online, so I worked 8 am to 5 pm as a tour guide in the admissions office. Since there were hardly any tours, I answered incoming school phone calls. During that time, I got paid to sit at my computer, watch Netflix, attend virtual class, do homework, and occasionally answer a worried mother's call. I chose to devote my time to my portfolio. Not a bad gig - getting paid to sit and do whatever I pleased.

The website was designed using Elementor, WordPress, and a custom template I created using CSS and HTML. My biggest constraints were content jumping, slow page loading speeds, and configuring mobile responsiveness.

Approach

  • Value Proposition - Plan Key Aspects
  • Product Strategy - Target Audience
  • Competitive Audit - Inspiration
  • User Interviews - Gain Feedback
  • A/B Testing - Comparing Old Site & New

Results

The end product is an accurate representation of my design style, my UX process evolution, and how I create users' solutions.

The Process

Empathize

I decided to recreate the portfolio to showcase my passion and newfound career interests. I felt that my past portfolio did not accurately represent my enthusiasm and drive towards my interests.

Define

A portfolio is everything to me. It humanizes a resume, illustrates a person's thought process, and displays personal interests. As a UX designer, I am a dreamer - someone who wants to change the world and supply solutions to do just that. I wanted to create a portfolio that reflects my point of view.

Ideate

This portfolio is my baby; it is important to log my past experiences and to allow myself to see growth.

Develop

I chose to develop it as fast as possible. To give me a platform to be constantly evolved, tested, and recreated.

Test

I am always getting user feedback on my website. I always want to know better ways of presenting my work and grasp the users' attention. I got the suggestion to create a case study about the website itself from a user tester.

The Design & Research

What did I do?

I went through all my past projects/experiences to create a site flow. I then took inspiration from other UX professionals. And developed the site in a way I knew how to control and easily update.

What was the result?

The result was a platform to showcase my work better and ease my personal burden of not liking my past portfolio.

What did I learn?

Through testing with other UX professionals, I learned it's not always about the content and projects you have, the entire research completed, or the pixel-perfect mockups. Rather it's the passion displayed and the process I took to achieve those end-user goals.

Next Steps

Empathize

I decided to recreate the portfolio to showcase my passion and newfound career interests. I felt that my past portfolio did not accurately represent my enthusiasm and drive towards my interests.
